Sammy suffered from the violence of his alcoholic father. He remembers watching his mother battered almost everyday. And there were times when he and his siblings were also beaten up for minor offenses. His father was also addicted to drugs and it was only a matter of time until he committed a terrible crime because of his addiction.
Fearful for his own safety, Sammy ran away from home several times. He stayed on the streets to escape. Fortunately, his mother mustered enough courage to seek help from the local DSWD office. She and her children were then referred to different social welfare agencies. Together with his two siblings, Sammy was referred to a DSWD-run Center while his mother was sheltered at a Center for women. They received temporary care and protective custody.
Eventually, Sammy was referred to Tuloy in 1997 for residential care and education. While in Tuloy, he was observed to be courteous, responsible, reliable and determined. He wanted to pursue his studies and help his family uplift their economic condition especially since they only had their mother to provide for their needs now.
Sammy took up Electrical Technology and in 1999 he underwent on-the-job training at a company servicing airconditioning units. Through diligence and hard work, he was eventually hired as a regular employee. His co-workers and boss have a high regard for Sammy because he knows how to work well and relate with others. He saved enough money to help buy a washing machine for his mother. Sammy is now married and is raising his own family.
